Curious that you bring up league which is actually the most restrictive competitive game, especially with the censorship. You get little to no freedom in how you approach the matches aside from a few metagaming gimmicks.
The alternative gamemodes don't have as much effort put into them as the main game, which is a constant for all modern multiplayer games. TF2 on the other hand has a ton of official maps (and some really good community maps), plus multiple experimental gamemodes.
>DOTA
DOTA has a lot more going on than League, giving the player more room for strategies and playstyles. It's a more complicated games, but a lot more rewarding than League.
Dunkey put it best with his video tbh.

>Role queue
I think role queue is the best example of modern multiplayers. Overwatch 1 had 28 characters, yet Blizzard forced you to only play from a small selection so that the game can be 2 tanks/2 attackers/2 healers.
Modern multiplayers are just so streamlined, inoffensive, and linear. There is little to no personality or thought put into them. Studios just ask the developers to replicate other popular games with a few gimmicks to make them legally distinct. No artistry whatsoever involved.
